How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Other AI Assistants
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI 'who should I hire for X?', the AI composes an answer from sources it considers clear, consistent, and trustworthy. Getting recommended is therefore an engineering problem with a name — Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — and small businesses can absolutely win at it, often faster than at classic SEO, because most competitors haven't started.
Step one is entity consistency. AI models cross-reference everything they know about you. Your website, Google Business Profile, directories, and social profiles must state the identical business name, the same one-sentence description, the same services, the same location claims. Every contradiction lowers the model's confidence — and unconfident models leave you out of the answer.
Step two is answer-shaped content. AI lifts passages that directly, completely answer a question in a couple of sentences. Pages structured as questions with immediate 40–60 word answers (then supporting depth) get quoted; walls of marketing prose get skipped. FAQ sections with proper schema markup are the lowest-effort, highest-yield format — every service page on a well-built site should carry them.
Step three is being present where models learn. LLMs weight sources like industry directories, review platforms, Reddit and forum discussions, and publications. A profile on Clutch, honest answers in communities where your customers ask questions, and a few guest articles compound into exactly the citation graph that makes a model say your name.
Step four is technical: your site must welcome AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) in robots.txt, serve structured data describing your organization and services, and load fast enough that crawlers index everything. This is plumbing — invisible when right, disqualifying when wrong.
Measure it by asking the assistants your customers' questions monthly and watching branded searches and 'heard about you from ChatGPT' leads. Every website we ship has all four layers built in from day one; if yours doesn't, our SEO/AEO/GEO service retrofits them. Either way, start now — right now the answer slots in your niche are still cheap to claim.
